An appliance repair expert says it’s “really hard to know” how many appliance repair shops are operating in the United States.
“I’m not going to put a number on it,” said John Dominguez, owner of Dominguiz Appliance Repair in Maumee.
“You’re talking about maybe tens of thousands of people that are actually going through the doors every day.”
Dominguez is part of a group of appliance repair professionals who work on behalf of a company called The Appliance Alliance.
The alliance, which represents many of the major manufacturers in the appliance repair industry, represents the largest appliance repair and maintenance company in the U.S.
The group says it works with appliance repair contractors and manufacturers in a coordinated effort to save consumers money, improve the health of the appliance industry, and improve customer satisfaction.
Dominguis own appliance repair shop, however, is one of several that does not use the alliance’s services.
Domingua says that the association has never asked him to sign a contract, and that the organization doesn’t reimburse him for repairs he does.
“We’re not in the business of taking the money that we’re taking,” Domingue said.
“I would say, if I do have a problem with a service, then I have the right to sue the manufacturer.”
Domenos company has repaired thousands of appliances since 2000, but he says he hasn’t seen a big increase in sales since the alliance started operating.
“They don’t pay us, we don’t take care of them, we’re not responsible,” Domenos said.
Domenosi also said the alliance doesn’t do enough to provide financial assistance to repair contractors.
“Some of them don’t even have insurance,” Domanosi said.
“In some of these situations, if they have to pay out of pocket for things, we wouldn’t do it.
If they have a financial hardship, then we would consider that and take care about it,” Domosi said, adding that he doesn’t have a relationship with the alliance.
The alliance says it does not reimburse the repair company, but Domenosi says he is not entitled to any compensation because the repair services are performed by non-union employees.
Domosi says that even though he works in a union shop, his union dues are not included in the repairs he makes.
The Alliance’s contract states that a union member working for Domeno’s repair shop will receive 50 percent of the cost of repair.
“It’s a pretty simple process,” Doms’ assistant, Michelle Parnell, told The Associated Press.
“They’re going to be able to make it work.”
She said that the alliance has also offered Domeni a job as a volunteer.
Parnella said she is looking for an assistant that can do more than just do repairs.
“If we were in a situation where we could be a full-time, paid worker, then that would be a great choice,” she said.
Parnell said that since Domenuis repair shop is in the state of Illinois, he could work in the Chicago area, but the union says he should have a job in the area of Indiana or Kentucky.
Doms owner says the alliance and the union should not be trying to pressure him to do something he feels is against his interests.
“You can’t tell me that I have to give up my right to work for free, when I have no choice,” Domes owner said.
